Bena Viola Bierman

Bena Viola (Schipper) Bierman, 78, from Dumont passed away on Thursday, August 14, 2014, at the Franklin General Hospital in Hampton, IA. Bena was born on January 7, 1936, at the home place in Butler County near Kesley, IA, to Richard and Jessie (Marks) Schipper, Sr. She attended country school near Kesley and graduated from Aplington High School in 1953. After a 4 Â½ year courtship and upon his return from overseas military service, Bena married the love of her life, Floyd G. Bierman, on May 17, 1957, at Washington Reformed Church in rural Ackley. To this union six children were born. Bena was a devoted and loving wife, mother, homemaker, and farmer. Along with farming for many years, Bena also worked as a cook at Franklin General Hospital in Hampton for 12 Â½ years, and a cook for 6 plus years at Kwik Star in Dumont. In 2006, Floyd and Bena moved to town to enjoy their retirement years. Bena was a long time member of the Kesley Presbyterian Church, in Kesley, IA. She was an elder of her church, member and President of the Women's Bible Study, VBS & Sunday School teacher/Superintendent, church pianist, and church choir member. She also was a member and officer of many organizations such as Presbyterian Mariners group, PTA & Music Boosters, Dumont Legion Auxiliary, and Women's Bowling Association. Bena attended as many sports events and concerts as possible for her 17 grandchildren. She also enjoyed bowling, Casino trips, playing cards, sewing, cooking and baking. Specken Dicken, doughnuts, lemon meringue pie, and the famous "Bena's Buns" were among some of her favorites. Bena had a strong, loving Christian life, and often would prefer to give the love and generosity to others, rather than be the recipient. Bena is survived by her loving husband, Floyd G. Bierman; six children: daughter, Carol (Michael) Nolte of Hampton; son, Gary (Shirley) Bierman of Dumont; son, Larry (Mary Lou) Bierman of Waterloo; son, Darrell (Brenda) Bierman of Steamboat Rock; daughter, Karen (Harold) Ringleb of Hampton; daughter, Marilee (Greg) Jones of Sheffield; seventeen grandchildren: Keith (Rayne) Nolte of Ackley; Matthew (Lauren) Nolte of Waverly; Cassandra Nolte of Mason City; Kayla (Michael) Norman of Hansell; Jason Bierman of Tripoli; Chris (Lindsey) Bierman of La Porte City; Nick Bierman of Waterloo; Nathaniel (Melissa) Bierman of Goldsboro, North Carolina; Patrick Bierman of Steamboat Rock; Whitney, Brady, and Courtney Ringleb of Hampton, Tyler Jones of Bristow; Daniel, Megan, Lindsay, and Caleb Jones of Sheffield; and six great-grandchildren: Emerick and Thatcher Nolte, Evelyn Nolte, Kohen Norman, Mackenzie Bierman, and Gabriel Bierman; one sister, Anna (Royce) Harms of Wellsburg; In-Laws: Lorraine (John) Schipper-Kalkwarf of Aplington; Clarene Schipper of Ackley, Marian Schipper of Grundy Center, Ken Nelson of Iowa City, Berdena Wolff of Aplington, Vernon (Pat) Bierman of Ackley, Donna Bierman of Marshalltown, and Barb Bierman of Garner; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents: Richard & Jessie Schipper; four Brothers: George A. Schipper, John R. Schipper, Richard W. Schipper, and Arnold Schipper; one sister: Marion Nelson; Father & Mother In-Law: George & Dena Bierman; In-Laws: Beverly Schipper, Garrelt Wolff, Norman & Imogene Maifeld, Gladys Bierman and Lawrence Bierman, and three nieces and one nephew. Burial will take place in the Dumont Cemetery.
