Bernice Viet

Bernice Viet, 88, of Ackley, passed away Tuesday, October 3, 2023 at Hansen Family Hospital. Funeral services will be 2:00 PM Monday, October 9, 2023 at the St. John's United Church of Christ in Ackley. She will be laid to rest at the Oakwood Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1:00 PM until service time on Monday at the church. Woodley Funeral Home of Iowa Falls is caring for Bernice and her family. Bernice Rose Viet was born on September 29, 1935 to George H. and Nina M. (Janssen) Van Eschen in Ackley, Iowa. She was a lifelong member of St. John’s UCC of Ackley. Bernice graduated from Ackley High School class of 1953. On July 6, 1953 Bernice was united in marriage to Hilko John Viet at St. John’s UCC in Ackley, Iowa. They raised five children together: Randy, Deb, Mike, Tom and Janice. Throughout her working years, Bernice worked at the Ackley Bakery, sold Avon, cleaned houses and businesses, worked at Dodger Manufacturing in Eldora and Boyt Manufacturing in Iowa Falls. Mom and dad loved being with their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. They went to all their activities they were able to. Mom was also a great historian for our family. She left us with numerous notebooks filled with events that happened throughout their lifetime. She took pictures at almost every event she attended and clipped the newspaper articles that family and friends were in. She kept the Janssen and Viet family books up to date. Mom was diagnosed with dementia eight years ago. It has been a difficult journey. The family has been blessed that she knew who we were to the end. Bernice Viet is survived by her children, Randy (Marilyn) Viet of Alden, Iowa, Deb (Don) Scallon of Ackley, Iowa, Mike (Tracey) Viet of Ackley, Iowa, Tom (Tammy) Viet of Geneva, Iowa and Janice (Doug) Grace of Rochester, Minnesota; eleven grandchildren; twenty-six great grandchildren; five great great grandchildren; three step grandchildren; five step great grandchildren; sister’s in-law, Amy Van Eschen of Mount Vernon, Washington and Esther Dickes of Hoffman Estates, Illinois. She was preceded in death by her husband, Hilko Viet; parents, George and Nina Van Eschen; and brother, George Van Eschen, Jr.
