Charles R. Thompson

Charles R. Thompson, 72, of Greene, Iowa, passed away Saturday, February 25, 2023, at Avera St. Anthony's Hospital in O'Neill, Nebraska. A public visitation will take place from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Thursday, March 2, 2023, at Counsell Woodley Funeral Home in Greene. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, March 3, 2023, at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Greene with an additional hour of visitation at the church prior to the service. Burial will take place at Rose Hill Cemetery in Greene. Charles “Chuck” Roy Thompson was born to Verne Roy and Leota (Hearn) Thompson in Charles City, IA on June 13, 1950. He grew up on the family farm driving tractors and farm machinery from a young age and had the opportunity to work building roads near Ames. On September 11, 1968 he enlisted in the Army engineers and served in Vietnam as part of the 572nd light engineers near Bao Loc driving his 6 by 6 10 ton truck clearing trees and building highway 20. Upon discharge from the Army Chuck settled back in Greene. A mutual friend set him up on a date with Carolyn Thomason and the two were united in marriage on January 11, 1974. Little did they know the adventure God would take them on when they took their vows. They were blessed with twins, Shawn and Dawn, on November 15th, 1976. Chuck enjoyed farming the family farm and welding in his free time. Chuck also worked as a rural mail carrier for the United States Postal Service. He designed and built a couple 4-person pedal cars that the family enjoyed together. On July 4th, 1993 his daughter Dawn died in a car accident within a mile of the family farm triggering Shawn's bipolar disease. Despite difficulty and tragedies in life Chuck and Carolyn had a loving, enduring relationship depending on Christ and supporting each other. During his retirement Chuck enjoyed reading, going out to movies and concerts, and going out to eat with Carolyn till her death February 26th, 2022. He then moved to Nebraska, living at the Country Lane Assisted Living in O’Neill, NE and spending time with Shawn and wife Kim and his grandchildren Caleb and Genny. He was blessed his remaining 7 months getting to see Shawn almost daily and grilling steaks with the family each Sunday night. Chuck was preceded in death by his wife Carolyn, daughter Dawn, his parents, brother Bill Thompson and by his sister Jill Gillespie. He is survived by his son Shawn (Kim) Thompson and his grandchildren Caleb and Genevieve. What Chuck believed can be summed up in the words spoken by General Robert E. Lee, "I can only say that I am nothing but a poor sinner, trusting in Christ alone for salvation." Counsell Woodley Funeral Home of Greene is caring for Chuck and his family.
