Esther June Boomgarden Schmidt

Esther June Boomgarden Schmidt, 97, of Allison, Iowa, passed away Tuesday, November 5, 2019, at the Rehabilitation Center of Allison. She was born on June 27, 1922, in Greene, to Otto and Marie (Endelman) Brocka. Esther was baptized on August 17, 1922, in Clarksville. She was educated through the eighth grade and then received her GED at age 50 from Hawkeye. Esther married Pete Boomgarden on September 1, 1943, at St. John's Lutheran Church - Vilmar. To this union five children were born; Jeff, Robert, RaeAnn, David and Mari. They lived on a farm west of Vilmar and were never without work or chores to do. While Pete served in the military, Esther lived with her folks on the farm. She spent hours milking cows by hand and helping her dad with the pigs, all while raising their five children. Esther also worked in a factory for a while, making clothing for the soldiers and used one of the first ever electric sewing machines. Pete passed away on February 21, 1971. She then married Paul Schmidt on March 27, 1981, at St. James Lutheran Church; he also preceded her in death in 2007. In her later years, Esther worked for Allison-Bristow Schools in the kitchen. Esther was a member of St. James Lutheran Church in Allison. She enjoyed fishing, crocheting and quilting, making quilts for every person in her family. Esther loved her family and never missed an activity or event they had. She loved her Lord and helped pass that love to her family as a loving wife, mother and grandmother. Esther is survived by her son Robert (Betty) Boomgarden of Cedar Falls, daughter RaeAnn (Bill) Codner of Allison, son David Boomgarden of Horton, daughter Mari Conklin (Stan Harms) of Allison, daughter-in-law Sally Boomgarden of Florida, step-children Jim (Bev) Schmidt of Nebraska, Donna Buss of Allison, Gary (Ramona) Schmidt of Greene, Larry (Karla) Schmidt of Allison, grandchildren Sara (Calvin) Trepp, Mike (Sherri) Boomgarden, Matt (Renae) Boomgarden, Casey Codner, Keri (Eric) McGlynn, Cole (Diane) Boomgarden, Lee (Colton) Salyards, Shelbi Boomgarden, Kenny Carter and Dennis (Lora) Carter, fifteen great-grandchildren, two great great-grandchildren, numerous step-grandchildren and their families, sister Marvel Landers of Greene, sister-in-law Dorothy Brocka of Bristow, along with numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, two husbands, son Jeff Boomgarden, son-in-law Craig Conklin, brothers Ernest, Harry, Floyd, Alvin, Alfred, Lavern and Melvin and sisters Susan and Gladys.
