Evelyn Jean Johnson

Evelyn Jean Johnson (Meyer), 82, formerly of Latimer, Iowa passed away Monday, August 29, 2022, at Grand JiVante care center in Ackley, Iowa. She was born on September 25, 1939, in Woden, Iowa to Edwin and Eva Ruth (Valley) Meyer. Evelyn spent her early childhood in Woden before the family moved to Dows, Iowa where she graduated from Dows High School in 1957. She attended Allen Memorial Hospital Lutheran School of Nursing in Waterloo, Iowa where she earned her Registered Nurse certification in 1960. After graduating she was united in marriage to her high school boyfriend Larry Johnson on September 11, 1960, in Dows. From this union three sons were born: Curtis, Craig, and Tim. Evelyn worked at Franklin General Hospital for several years until retiring from nursing in 1969. After which she focused on raising her young family. Over time, Evelyn took on more responsibilities on the family farm. She did bookwork, hauled grain, operating farm equipment and did whatever else needed to be done. In their younger days, Larry and Evelyn enjoyed card clubs, snowmobiling, and couple’s club at church. Evelyn was an excellent gardener and always enjoyed sharing the fruits of her labor, which her children and grandchildren greatly appreciated. She was an avid reader and enjoyed jigsaw puzzles. Evelyn was very active in church. She served in many roles at the churches where she was a member. She also served on the boards for the Franklin County Board of Health and Women’s Aglow Fellowship. She was a current member of Immanuel United Church of Christ in Latimer. Evelyn enjoyed her time with children, grandchildren and great grandchildren and enjoyed hosting the family for holidays. Evelyn and Larry spent many winters in south Texas where they enjoyed the warm weather, golfing, and time with many friends. Evelyn is survived by her sons Curtis of Iowa Falls, Craig (Nancy) of Latimer and Tim (Suzanne) of Ankeny, grandchildren Kelsey (Bryce) Chaplin, Cassandra Johnson, Brett (Nicki) Johnson, Kayla Johnson, Joel (Jess) Johnson, Jenna Johnson, Nate Johnson, Cameron Johnson and Tori Johnson, great-grandchildren Colton Chaplin, Parker Chaplin, Cora Johnson and Milo Johnson, brothers Keith Meyer and Dean (Kathy) Meyer, brother-in-law Arnie Grundberg, along with several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents Edwin & Eva Ruth, husband Larry and sister Betty Grundberg. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 on Wednesday, August 31st at Counsell Woodley Funeral Home, Hampton, Iowa. Funeral service will be held at 11:00 on Thursday, September 1st at Immanuel United Church of Christ, Latimer, Iowa. Burial will take place in St. Peter’s Cemetery, rural Coulter.
