Jon Craig Schmitt, 70, of rural Sheffield, Iowa, passed away peacefully at home on March 19, 2026, after a courageous battle with Acute Myloid Leukemia. Woodley Funeral Home and Crematory of Hampton is caring for Jon and his family. Jon was born on May 29, 1955, in Hampton, Iowa, to Forrest and Roma Schmitt. He spent his entire life in the Hampton and Sheffield area, rooted deeply in the land, the community, and the people he cherished. A 1973 graduate of Hampton Community High School, Jon went on to attend NIACC in Mason City, earning a degree in Automotive Mechanics in 1975. That same passion for engines and hard work led him to work at Sheahan Chevrolet after graduation, then on July 1, 1999, he purchased that business and opened Jon’s Auto & Truck Repair where he faithfully served the community. Jon said it was easier to buy the place than to try and move all of his stuff out. Jon worked in that same building for over 50 years. To Jon, customers were never just customers; they were friends. And by that measure, Jon had hundreds of friends. Though he dedicated decades to his business, Jon often joked that he needed a full-time job to support his true love: farming. He lived on the family farm along Highway 65 from his teenage years when his family moved into the brick house. Farming wasn’t just work—it was part of who he was. Jon was a man of many talents and commitments. In high school, he excelled in FFA, auto shop, and band, where he was first chair trombone. That musical passion continued throughout his adult life as he played lead trombone in the Hampton Municipal Band for 54 years. He was an active and generous member of the community, contributing his time and energy to numerous local organizations and causes, including Sourdough Days/People in the Park, Relay For Life, Pheasants Forever, Windsor Theatre, Franklin County Fair, Sheffield EMT, and Sheffield Fire Department. In recognition of his dedication, he was honored by Sheffield Community Club for his outstanding community service. Jon had a personality that was as memorable as it was genuine. Whether fixing a truck, attending the county fair, or simply walking down the street, he seemed to know everyone—and everyone knew him. His kindness, humor, and willingness to help others defined his life. One of Jon’s favorite traditions was attending the Franklin County Fair each year—his self-proclaimed “vacation”—where he enjoyed everything from tractor pulls and demolition derbies, to rodeos and live music. He was also an avid sports fan who, after years as a loyal Iowa Hawkeye, was lovingly converted into an Iowa State Cyclone supporter by his partner, Sheri Bogue. In December 2024, Jon was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia. Despite being told the odds were against him, Jon faced his illness with the same determination that defined his life. He achieved remission, continued doing what he loved, attended basketball games in Ames, and worked until his retirement on February 28, 2026. Even in his final chapter, Jon showed strength, resilience, and an unwavering spirit. Jon is survived by his partner, Sheri Bogue, his sisters, Lori Schmitt of Tigard, Oregon, and Diane (Robert) Moore of Porter Ranch, California; and many extended family members, friends, and community members whose lives he touched. He was preceded in death by his parents, Forrest and Roma Schmitt and grandparents Leo & Erma Evans (Beherns) and John & Marie Schmitt (Grabbe) Jon generously donated his body to science through the University of Iowa Hospitals. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Leukemia Research Foundation Jon’s memory. With Jon’s AML he was not to have live flowers near him, we request in that memory that you please refrain from sending flowers. Jon lived a simple and meaningful life—built on hard work, loyalty, and community. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who knew him.
