Funeral services for LeRoy and Connie Benning will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, June 3, 2023, at St Peter's United Church in rural Geneva, IA. Visitation will take place for one hour prior to the service. Burial will take place in the church cemetery. Counsell Woodley Funeral Home is caring for the Benning family. LeRoy William Benning, 85, of Ackley, Iowa, passed away Thursday, October 28, 2021, at Franklin Country View Nursing Facility in Hampton. LeRoy was born on May 16, 1936, in Ackley, to Edward and Christina (Mehmen) Benning. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Peter's United Church of Christ in rural Geneva, and was very active there the remainder of his life. LeRoy graduated from Ackley-Geneva High School, class of 1955. He joined the Iowa National Guard. LeRoy was united in marriage to Connie Zacharias on September 30, 1956, in Geneva; this year they celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary. LeRoy was a hardworking man and thoroughly enjoyed working. He worked for Adams Brothers laying carpet, Farmland Foods, and Omnium; retiring at the age of 81. When he wasn't working, LeRoy enjoyed bowling, fishing, trapping, camping and was a sprint car racing fan. LeRoy was survived by his wife, Connie Benning of Ackley; daughter, Shelley (Arup) Bhuyan of Idaho Falls, Idaho; son, Barton (Mary) Benning of Boone; grandchildren Kassie Bhuyan of Kansas City, Kansas, Sondra (Eathan) Bhuyan-Jaax of Kansas City, Kansas, Jordan (Ashley) Benning of Grimes, and Kaci Benning of Boone; sister, Luella Benning of Colorado Springs, Colorado; along with many cousins, nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Christina; infant son, Craig; daughter, Jennifer; and sisters, Maxine and Deloris. Connie Lou Benning, 86, of Ackley, passed away Tuesday, January 17, 2023, at Franklin General Hospital in Hampton. Connie Lou Zacharias Benning was born in Ellsworth Hospital on September 18, 1936, to Ted and Blanche Zacharias. One sister, Maxine, welcomed her home. Connie grew up in the Bradford, Geneva and Hampton area on farms, until 1950 when she and her mother moved to Hampton, due to the death of her father. She attended Glass School in the country three miles from Hampton through 7th grade. After that, she attended 8th grade and high school in Hampton. She was united in marriage to LeRoy W. Benning on September 30, 1956, at St. Peter's UCC in Geneva, Iowa. Together they faithfully attended for the next 65 years where Connie sang in the choir, served on many committees, and attended Women's Fellowship. She worked at Ellsworth Municipal Hospital for a total of 13 years. There she worked as a CNA, dietary, and in the business office as a switchboard operator and administrator. Connie enjoyed following her children in athletics and musical events. She was extremely proud of all their accomplishments. She is survived by her children, Shelley (Arup) Bhuyan of Idaho Falls, Idaho, Barton (Mary) Benning of Boone, Iowa; grandchildren, Kassie Bhuyan of Kansas City, Kansas, Sondra (Eathan) Bhuyan-Jaax of Kansas City, Kansas, Jordan (Ashley) Benning of Killeen, Texas, and Kaci Benning of Ames, Iowa; nieces and nephews, Marlese Alden, Dennis Alden, Norlyn and Cindy Raisch, Dalieth and Larry Johnston, Brian Raisch, and Alanna and Mike Husar; sister-in-law, Luella Benning; and by numerous grand and great-grand nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her loving husband LeRoy; parents Ted and Blanche Zacharias; in-laws, Ed and Christina Benning; infant son Craig and daughter Jennifer; sister Maxine; brother-in-law Dale; sisters-in-law Deloris and Maxine; nephew Daryl, and her niece Lynette.
